PE Learning Journey

Swimming

All children across the Mayflower Federation are given the chance to learn to swim.  We are very lucky to have our own swimming pool, so we provide plenty of opportunities for children to learn to swim throughout their time at Mayflower Federation, most reaching above the expectation of 25 metres by the end of Key Stage 2.

Children within KS2 receive swimming lessons within the academic year.  This investment allows for children to become strong and confident swimmers, whilst still being able to fulfil all other aspects of the taught PE curriculum.

Mayflower Federation also provide additional after-school clubs to allow for further children to benefit from learning to swim from an earlier age.  Private lesson are also held at the pool that parents/ carers, other schools and members of the community can benefit from.

In particular, pupils are taught to:

  • Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • Use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
  • Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
